Treatment of Atrophic Facial Scars

Treatment of Atrophic Facial Scars with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to improve the appearance of certain types of scars caused by injuries, inflammation, burns, or acne. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin’s connective tissue and helps maintain hydration, elasticity, and tissue volume. When appropriately selected and administered, dermal fillers can help correct specific skin depressions and irregularities.

Results typically last between 9 and 12 months, depending on the type of filler used, the treatment area, and individual metabolic factors.

Preparation: What Should You Know Before Treatment?

Scars vary in their cause, depth, width, and shape, so each requires an individualized approach. During a consultation, Dr. Dario Lizatović will assess your skin and discuss your goals and expectations before recommending an appropriate treatment plan and filler volume.

Your medical history, previous procedures, and current health will also be reviewed to help determine whether the treatment is suitable for you.

Before treatment, it is advisable to avoid smoking, as smoking can impair healing, and to maintain adequate skin hydration. All makeup should be removed before the procedure.

Procedure: How Are Scars Treated with Fillers?

A topical anesthetic cream may be applied to the treatment area and left in place for approximately 15 minutes to minimize discomfort.

The skin is then thoroughly cleansed, and the doctor carefully injects the dermal filler using an appropriate technique tailored to the type and location of the scar.

Fillers with suitable properties are selected to help restore volume beneath depressed scars and create a smoother-looking skin surface.

The procedure typically takes up to 30 minutes. The degree of improvement depends on the characteristics of the scar and the individual’s response to treatment.

Recovery and Precautions

Most patients can return to their usual daily activities shortly after treatment.

Temporary redness, tightness, swelling, or bruising may occur at the injection sites. These effects usually improve within a few days, although recovery varies between individuals.

For approximately one week after treatment, avoid massages and other aesthetic, cosmetic, or laser procedures in the treated area, unless your doctor advises otherwise. Saunas and tanning beds should also be avoided during this period.

As with all injectable fillers, complications are possible, including infection, lumps, asymmetry, and, rarely, vascular occlusion. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe pain, unusual skin discoloration, or visual disturbances.
