Calf Reduction and Augmentation
Well-shaped calves play an important role in creating attractive, proportionate legs for both women and men. Achieving the desired calf shape and proportions is not always possible through a balanced diet or even years of regular exercise.
For this reason, many patients choose calf reduction or augmentation surgery to improve the appearance and proportions of their lower legs. Calf contouring procedures are becoming increasingly popular in aesthetic plastic surgery.
If your goal is to reduce calf circumference, liposuction may be an effective solution when excess fatty tissue is present. In many cases, removing localized fat deposits from the lower calf, just above the ankle, can help create a more defined appearance, enhance natural muscle contours, and make the legs look slimmer.
For patients who wish to increase calf volume and achieve fuller, more proportionate lower legs, specially designed calf implants may be recommended.
Preparation: Choosing the Right Approach for Your Goals
Thorough preparation, careful planning, and clear communication with your surgeon are essential for achieving successful surgical outcomes.
The surgical technique, treatment approach, recovery process, and expected results depend on whether the procedure involves calf reduction or calf augmentation.
During your initial consultation, our surgeon will assess your anatomy, discuss your aesthetic goals, answer all your questions, and provide detailed instructions regarding the necessary preoperative preparations.
Surgical Technique
Calf Reduction
Calf reduction is performed using liposuction, a surgical technique that removes excess fatty tissue through specially designed cannulas.
The procedure typically takes approximately 1–1.5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Liposuction is suitable for reducing localized fat deposits but does not directly reduce the size of the calf muscles.
Calf Augmentation
Calf augmentation involves the placement of specially designed, elongated implants available in different shapes and sizes to complement the patient’s anatomy and desired results.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes approximately 1–1.5 hours.
A horizontal incision measuring approximately 3–4 cm is made in the crease behind the knee. Through this incision, the surgeon creates a carefully positioned pocket within the tissues of the calf to accommodate the implant.
The implant is positioned to enhance the natural contour of the lower leg and create a fuller, more balanced appearance. The goal is to achieve results that look and feel as natural as possible, although implant visibility or palpability may vary depending on individual anatomy and tissue coverage.
Recovery and Precautions: What You Should Know
Following calf contouring surgery, a compression bandage or specialized compression garment is typically applied to support the treated area and help manage postoperative swelling.
Depending on the type and extent of the procedure, compression may be recommended for several days or weeks.
Regular postoperative follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and provide detailed instructions for the next stages of recovery.
Bruising and swelling are common after calf surgery. Patients may also experience tightness, tenderness, and discomfort during the first two weeks following the procedure.
Most patients can gradually return to social activities within approximately 2–3 weeks, depending on the procedure and their individual recovery.
Strenuous physical activities, prolonged standing, and extended walking should generally be avoided for approximately 5–6 weeks after surgery or until your surgeon confirms that it is safe to resume them.
Gentle movement and short walks may be recommended earlier to support circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots, according to your surgeon’s instructions.
Following the prescribed postoperative care plan is essential for proper healing and achieving the best possible aesthetic outcome.
