Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia Surgery)

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Enlarged male breasts, commonly known as gynecomastia, can develop due to hormonal imbalances, changes during puberty, certain medical conditions, or the long-term use of specific medications.

True gynecomastia involves an increase in glandular breast tissue, while breast enlargement caused primarily by excess fatty tissue is known as pseudogynecomastia. In some cases, both glandular and fatty tissue contribute to the condition.

Living with enlarged male breasts can affect self-confidence, body image, and overall quality of life. Some men feel uncomfortable wearing fitted clothing, participating in sports, or appearing shirtless in public.

Although not every case of gynecomastia can be prevented, the condition can often be treated successfully through male breast reduction surgery.

Depending on the underlying cause, surgical correction may involve liposuction, removal of excess glandular tissue, or a combination of both techniques to create a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

Preparation: What You Should Know Before Surgery

During your free consultation at Clinic Olymp, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns, expectations, and available treatment options with our experienced surgeons.

Dr Predrag Matejin and Dr Dario Lizatović will answer your questions, explain the surgical procedure, and recommend the most appropriate approach based on your individual condition.

The first step is to determine the type and underlying cause of breast enlargement.

Your surgeon will review your medical history, current health, hormonal status, medications, allergies, and any other factors that may contribute to gynecomastia.

Additional examinations or laboratory tests may be recommended when necessary to identify potential hormonal or medical causes.

Our initial consultations are free and available to anyone considering treatment.

Surgical Technique: How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

The surgical technique used for male breast reduction depends on whether the enlargement is primarily caused by excess fatty tissue, glandular tissue, or a combination of both.

Gynecomastia Correction with Liposuction

When enlarged male breasts are mainly caused by excess fatty tissue, liposuction may be sufficient to improve the chest contour.

In selected cases, this procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, sometimes with additional sedation.

Through small incisions, the surgeon removes excess fat using a thin cannula, helping create a flatter and more defined chest appearance.

Surgical Removal of Glandular Breast Tissue

When breast enlargement is caused by excess glandular tissue, surgical excision is usually required.

This procedure may be performed under general anesthesia, and an overnight stay at the clinic may be recommended depending on the extent of surgery.

The surgeon removes the excess glandular tissue through carefully positioned incisions, often along the edge of the areola, to minimize visible scarring.

Combined Gynecomastia Surgery

In cases where both excess fat and glandular tissue are present, a combination of liposuction and surgical excision may be recommended.

This approach allows the surgeon to address both components of breast enlargement and improve the overall shape and proportions of the male chest.

The most suitable surgical technique is determined during your consultation based on your anatomy, the severity of gynecomastia, and your desired results.

Recovery and Precautions

Recovery after gynecomastia surgery depends on the surgical technique used and the extent of the procedure.

Most patients can return to light daily and social activities within approximately one week, depending on their individual recovery.

Strenuous physical activities, heavy lifting, and sports should generally be avoided for approximately 4 weeks, or until your surgeon confirms that it is safe to resume them.

Following surgery, patients are usually advised to wear a specialized chest compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks.

This garment helps support the healing tissues, reduce swelling, and improve comfort during recovery.

Mild swelling, bruising, and temporary discomfort are common after surgery. These symptoms generally improve gradually over the following weeks, with much of the initial swelling subsiding within approximately 3 to 5 weeks.

If non-absorbable sutures are used following glandular tissue removal, they are typically removed approximately 10 to 14 days after surgery.

Temporary changes in nipple sensation, including numbness or increased sensitivity, may also occur. Sensation often improves over time, although permanent changes are possible.

As with any surgical procedure, gynecomastia correction carries potential risks, including bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, contour irregularities, asymmetry, and scarring.

Our medical team will provide detailed postoperative instructions and monitor your recovery through scheduled follow-up appointments.
