Cheek Augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid or Your Own Fat Tissue
The shape, size, and position of the cheekbones are determined not only by the underlying bone structure but also by the soft tissues covering them. These tissues naturally change over time. As we age, the midface gradually loses volume, making the cheekbones less prominent and altering the youthful, triangular contours of the face.
At Clinic Olymp, we offer two methods of cheek augmentation:
- Cheek augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers
- Cheek augmentation with your own fat tissue (autologous fat transfer)
Before determining the appropriate amount of hyaluronic acid or fat tissue, your doctor will assess your facial width, nose length, distance between the eyes, and overall facial proportions.
You can learn more about each method below. If you are unsure which treatment is most suitable for you, we invite you to schedule a free consultation.

Preparation: Getting Ready for Cheek Augmentation
Every face is unique and requires an individualized approach. The goal of cheek augmentation is to achieve natural-looking enhancement that creates a fresher, more youthful, and balanced facial appearance.
To achieve results that complement your facial features, it is important to undergo a detailed facial assessment before treatment.
Your doctor will evaluate your facial structure, including the width of your face, the length of your nose, the distance between your eyes, and the proportions of the midface.
During your free consultation with Dr. Lizatović or Dr. Panfilov, you will discuss your expectations, previous cosmetic procedures, current medical conditions, and any medications or supplements you are taking.
Some of this information will be collected through a medical questionnaire, while the remaining details will be discussed during your consultation.
Before undergoing fat transfer, your surgeon may recommend temporarily adjusting certain medications or supplements that can increase bleeding risk, including vitamin E supplements and aspirin-containing medications.
Hormonal medications should also be discussed with your surgeon. Do not discontinue prescribed medication without consulting the doctor who prescribed it.
Smoking cessation and adequate hydration may also be recommended to support healing and recovery.
Cheek Augmentation Methods
Cheek Augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Well-defined cheekbones are often associated with a youthful and balanced facial appearance. They help create the impression of fuller cheeks, improved facial contours, and a refreshed look.
Whether your cheekbones have become less prominent due to aging and soft tissue volume loss or are naturally less defined, hyaluronic acid fillers can help enhance their shape and projection.
Cheek augmentation with dermal fillers is a minimally invasive treatment that can restore volume and improve overall facial harmony.
By adding volume to the midface, the procedure may also soften the appearance of certain facial folds and create a more rested, youthful appearance.
Treatment Technique: How Do We Enhance Your Cheekbones?
The procedure begins with the application of a topical anesthetic cream to help minimize discomfort during the injections.
After approximately 15 minutes, the anesthetic cream is removed, and the doctor carefully injects hyaluronic acid filler into the selected areas using fine needles or cannulas.
The treatment does not require surgical incisions and generally leaves no visible scars.
Initial results are noticeable immediately. Depending on the treatment plan, you may be able to observe the changes in a mirror during the procedure and discuss the desired level of enhancement with your doctor.
The entire treatment usually takes up to 30 minutes, and you can generally return home immediately afterward.
Recovery and Precautions: Follow Your Doctor’s Instructions
Mild redness, swelling, tenderness, or small marks at the injection sites may occur after treatment.
These effects usually improve within the first few days, although bruising or swelling may occasionally last longer.
Most patients can resume their usual daily activities shortly after the procedure.
During the first 24 hours, it is generally recommended to avoid alcohol, strenuous physical activity, and applying makeup directly to the treated areas.
For approximately three days, your doctor may advise you to avoid saunas, tanning beds, swimming pools, and prolonged sun exposure.
The results of cheek fillers typically last between 10 and 24 months, although the duration varies depending on the filler used, individual metabolism, and other factors.
Although uncommon, serious complications of dermal fillers can include vascular occlusion, tissue damage, and visual disturbances. Severe pain, unusual skin discoloration, or changes in vision require immediate medical attention.
Cheek Augmentation with Your Own Fat Tissue
Cheek augmentation with autologous fat transfer, also known as cheek lipofilling, is a facial contouring procedure that uses the patient’s own fat tissue to restore volume and improve the appearance of the midface.
This procedure may be performed as part of facial liposculpture or Face Styling to achieve a fresher, more youthful appearance.
Fat transfer can also help improve certain facial asymmetries, address selected contour irregularities, and enhance overall facial proportions.
As we age, the amount of subcutaneous fat in the face decreases, while collagen and elastic fibers gradually diminish.
These changes, combined with the effects of gravity, can cause the cheeks to lose fullness, create shadows beneath the cheekbones, and make nasolabial folds more noticeable.
During cheek lipofilling, fat is harvested from another area of the body, processed, and carefully injected into the tissues around the cheekbones to restore lost volume.
In selected patients, cheek fat transfer may also be combined with facelift surgery to achieve more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
Treatment Technique: Cheek Augmentation with Fat Transfer
The procedure begins with harvesting fat tissue through liposuction, commonly from the inner thighs or another suitable donor area.
The fat is collected using thin cannulas. The harvesting and preparation process may take approximately one hour, depending on the amount of fat required and the technique used.
After collection, the fat tissue is carefully processed to prepare it for transfer.
The surgeon then injects small amounts of the processed fat into selected areas of the cheeks using fine cannulas.
The fat is distributed in multiple layers and small quantities to support integration with the surrounding tissues and encourage the development of an adequate blood supply.
This technique allows the surgeon to gradually restore volume and shape the cheek contours while maintaining natural facial proportions.
Recovery and Precautions: What Happens After Treatment?
Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness may occur following cheek augmentation with fat transfer.
These symptoms often improve within approximately one week, although some swelling may persist for longer.
Your surgeon may recommend carefully applying cold compresses and avoiding cosmetic products on the treated areas during the initial recovery period.
Most patients can return to light everyday activities within approximately 2 to 5 days, depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing.
Strenuous physical activity and prolonged sun exposure should generally be avoided for approximately two weeks or as advised by your surgeon.
Not all transferred fat cells will survive in their new location. A portion of the fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body during the first weeks and months after treatment.
The amount of fat retained varies between patients, and the final result becomes more apparent as swelling resolves and the transferred tissue stabilizes.
For this reason, additional fat transfer may sometimes be recommended to achieve the desired volume.
At Clinic Olymp, additional harvested fat tissue may be preserved under specialized storage conditions for potential future use, where medically appropriate and in accordance with applicable protocols.
Possible complications include infection, asymmetry, contour irregularities, fat necrosis, and unpredictable fat retention. Your surgeon will explain the risks, benefits, and expected recovery during your consultation.
