Lip Augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid or Your Own Fat Tissue
Lips play an important role in overall facial appearance. Naturally full, symmetrical, and well-defined lips can enhance facial harmony and contribute to a youthful, attractive look.
Many patients wish to achieve slightly fuller lips, improve their shape and symmetry, or reduce fine lines around the upper lip, which can sometimes cause lipstick to bleed. Others are looking for a combination of these improvements to create a fresher, more balanced appearance.
The most suitable lip augmentation method is selected in consultation with your doctor. This decision depends on your personal preferences, expectations, medical history, existing lip asymmetry, the depth of wrinkles, facial proportions, and the results that can realistically be achieved.
At Clinic Olymp, we offer two lip augmentation methods:
- Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers
- Lip augmentation with your own fat tissue (autologous fat transfer)
Both methods aim to enhance lip volume and definition while maintaining a natural appearance that complements your facial features.
The same amount of hyaluronic acid or transferred fat can produce very different results in different patients. This is why an individualized approach is essential. Clear communication between the patient and doctor helps establish realistic expectations and achieve a balanced result.
Preparation: What Should You Know Before Lip Augmentation?
Understanding facial proportions is essential when planning lip augmentation. Your doctor will consider factors such as the length of your nose, chin shape, distance between your eyes, overall facial dimensions, and the condition of your skin.
The goal is to achieve fuller, more defined lips without compromising your natural facial harmony.
Because every face is different, the amount of filler or fat required varies from person to person. A personalized treatment plan is therefore essential.
During your free consultation, our doctor will examine your facial features, explain the available treatment options, and answer any questions you may have.
It is important to inform your doctor if you have diabetes, lupus, connective tissue disorders, bleeding or clotting problems, or any other relevant medical condition. You should also disclose any medications you are taking, previous cosmetic treatments, and known allergies.

Lip Augmentation Methods
Lip Augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Lips may naturally be asymmetrical, uneven in shape, or lacking in volume. Hyaluronic acid fillers can help enhance lip fullness, improve definition, and correct certain asymmetries while preserving a natural appearance.
The treatment can also improve lip hydration and create a smoother, more youthful-looking lip contour.
Results typically last approximately 8 to 14 months, although the duration varies depending on the product used, individual metabolism, and other factors.
Lip sensation is generally preserved, although temporary sensitivity changes, swelling, or tenderness may occur following treatment.
Treatment Technique: Quick and Minimally Invasive
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers begins with the application of a topical anesthetic cream to minimize discomfort during the injections.
After approximately 15 minutes, the doctor carefully injects the dermal filler using a fine needle or cannula and a technique selected according to your anatomy and desired results.
The procedure is relatively quick and is generally well tolerated, although some discomfort may occur.
Initial results are visible immediately after treatment. Mild swelling, redness, tenderness, or bruising may also develop.
Swelling often improves significantly within the first 48 hours, although it can take longer to resolve completely.
Recovery and Precautions
You can usually return home immediately after lip filler treatment and resume most everyday activities shortly afterward.
During the first few days, your lips may appear swollen or feel tender. These effects generally improve gradually.
Your doctor may recommend avoiding makeup on the treated area for the first 24 to 48 hours, as well as minimizing pressure on the lips and avoiding strenuous exercise immediately after treatment.
Although the results are visible right away, the final appearance is generally assessed after approximately two weeks, once the initial swelling has subsided.
As with any injectable treatment, complications are possible. These include bruising, infection, asymmetry, lumps, and, rarely, vascular occlusion, which can lead to tissue damage. Any unusual severe pain, skin discoloration, or visual symptoms require immediate medical attention.
Lip Augmentation with Your Own Fat Tissue
Lip augmentation with autologous fat transfer is a procedure that uses fat harvested from another area of your body to enhance lip volume and shape.
Because the procedure uses your own tissue, it does not require synthetic dermal fillers.
A portion of the transferred fat may establish a lasting blood supply and remain in place long-term. However, some fat is naturally reabsorbed during healing, and the final volume cannot be predicted precisely.
In addition to enhancing lip fullness, fat transfer may improve the appearance and softness of the surrounding tissues in selected patients.
Treatment Technique: How Does Lip Augmentation with Fat Transfer Work?
Fat tissue is typically harvested through a small liposuction procedure, often from the inner thighs or another suitable donor area.
The harvested fat is then carefully processed and prepared for transfer. This preparation helps separate viable fat tissue from excess fluid and other components.
Using fine cannulas, the surgeon injects small amounts of processed fat along the lip borders and into selected areas of the lips to improve volume, shape, and definition.
Depending on the surgical technique and circumstances, you may be able to observe parts of the procedure using a mirror and discuss the desired appearance with your doctor.
Lip augmentation with fat transfer can also be combined with facial contouring procedures, sometimes referred to as Face Styling.
In this approach, your own fat tissue may be used to restore volume to the cheeks, enhance the cheekbones, or soften certain facial wrinkles.
The duration of the procedure depends on the amount of fat harvested, the areas being treated, and the complexity of the treatment plan.
Recovery and Precautions After Fat Transfer
Lip augmentation with your own fat tissue is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning an overnight hospital stay is usually not required.
Most patients can return home the same day. However, the time needed to resume work and normal activities depends on the extent of the procedure, the anesthesia used, and individual recovery.
Swelling, bruising, and tenderness may occur in both the lips and the fat donor area.
Cold compresses may help reduce discomfort and swelling when used according to your surgeon’s instructions.
Lip swelling generally improves over approximately 7 to 10 days, although residual swelling may persist longer.
During the initial recovery period, your doctor may advise you to avoid applying cosmetic products to the treated area and to minimize pressure on the lips.
Although an increase in lip volume may be visible immediately, the final result develops gradually as swelling resolves and the transferred fat stabilizes.
A portion of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed by the body. The amount varies between patients and can be influenced by the surgical technique and individual healing.
For this reason, additional fat transfer may occasionally be recommended to achieve the desired volume.
At Clinic Olymp, additional harvested fat tissue may be preserved under specialized storage conditions for potential future use, where appropriate and in accordance with applicable medical protocols.
Possible complications include infection, asymmetry, irregular contours, fat necrosis, and unpredictable fat retention. Your surgeon will explain the potential risks and expected recovery during your consultation.
