Buttock Augmentation and Contouring with Implants or Fat Transfer – Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
Well-defined, proportionate buttocks can enhance the body’s natural curves and contribute to a balanced, hourglass-shaped figure. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can significantly improve the appearance of the buttocks.
However, the natural aging process, significant weight loss, and changes following pregnancy can lead to reduced skin elasticity, loss of volume, and weakening of the gluteal muscles. These changes may result in a flatter or less defined appearance that can sometimes be improved through surgical body contouring procedures.
Buttock augmentation, also known as gluteal augmentation, can be performed using two different techniques: the increasingly popular Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), which involves transferring the patient’s own fat from areas such as the waist, abdomen, and thighs to the buttocks, or the placement of specially designed silicone buttock implants.
Both women and men choose these procedures, particularly when exercise alone does not produce their desired body proportions.
In some cases, unwanted fat deposits around the buttocks can also be treated with liposuction to improve contour and create a more balanced appearance.
Preparation: What You Should Know Before Surgery
The most suitable surgical technique depends on your individual goals, expectations, overall health, anatomy, and any previous procedures you may have undergone.
During your free consultation at Clinic Olymp, our experienced surgical team will explain the available options, answer your questions, and recommend the necessary medical examinations.
A thorough assessment allows us to develop an individualized treatment plan, discuss realistic expectations, and determine the safest and most appropriate approach for your buttock augmentation or contouring procedure.
Buttock Augmentation and Contouring Techniques
Buttock Augmentation with Silicone Implants
Buttock augmentation with silicone implants is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes between 1 and 2 hours.
The procedure involves placing specially designed silicone implants with durable outer shells to increase volume and improve the shape and projection of the buttocks.
The appropriate implant size and shape are selected during your consultation, based on your anatomy, aesthetic preferences, and your surgeon’s recommendations.
Incisions are usually positioned within the natural crease between the buttocks, helping to conceal the resulting scars.
Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL): Buttock Augmentation with Your Own Fat
The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), also known as autologous fat transfer to the buttocks, has become one of the most widely discussed body contouring procedures in modern aesthetic surgery.
This technique offers the advantage of addressing two areas of the body during a single procedure: removing unwanted fat deposits from selected regions while using the harvested fat to enhance the shape and volume of the buttocks.
Fat is typically collected through liposuction from areas where excess fatty tissue is present, most commonly the abdomen, waist, flanks, and thighs.
By reducing localized fat deposits in these areas, the procedure can also improve overall body proportions and create a more defined silhouette.
Liposuction is performed carefully using controlled suction techniques to minimize damage to the harvested fat cells.
Depending on the patient’s anatomy and desired results, approximately 1,500–2,500 ml of fatty tissue may be harvested, although the amount varies considerably between patients.
The collected fat is then processed using specialized techniques, which may include centrifugation, to separate viable fat cells from excess fluids and other unwanted components.
The prepared fat is gradually injected into the buttocks using specialized cannulas, with careful attention to achieving balanced proportions and a natural-looking contour.
For patient safety, fat must be injected exclusively into the subcutaneous tissue, above the gluteal muscle, and not into the muscle itself. Modern safety recommendations also emphasize the use of real-time ultrasound guidance during gluteal fat grafting.
It is important to understand that some of the transferred fat will naturally be reabsorbed by the body during the healing process. The amount varies between patients, and approximately 30% or more may be reabsorbed during the first several months.
As a result, the final volume may be smaller than immediately after surgery, and additional treatment may occasionally be considered once the tissues have fully healed.
At Clinic Olymp, harvested fat may be preserved under specialized conditions for approximately 6–8 months, subject to the clinic’s storage protocols and medical suitability, potentially allowing for an additional fat transfer procedure if required.
One of the advantages of this technique is that the resulting scars are generally very small.
Fat harvesting and transfer are performed through several small incisions, usually only a few millimeters in length. These are typically positioned in less noticeable areas and gradually become less prominent as healing progresses.
The procedure generally takes approximately 2–3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
Recovery and Precautions
Recovery after buttock augmentation depends on the surgical technique used, the extent of the procedure, and individual healing characteristics.
Whether buttock augmentation is performed using a Brazilian Butt Lift with fat transfer or silicone implants, the initial recovery period generally lasts between 2 and 6 weeks.
Following surgery, patients typically spend one night at Clinic Olymp under medical supervision.
During the first days after surgery, direct pressure on the buttocks should be minimized according to your surgeon’s instructions, particularly following fat transfer.
Patients are generally advised to sleep on their stomach or side and avoid prolonged sitting directly on the treated area during the early recovery period. Your surgeon will provide specific guidance on positioning and the safe use of supportive cushions when necessary.
Most patients can gradually return to normal daily and social activities after approximately 2–3 weeks, depending on their recovery.
Sports, strenuous exercise, and heavy physical activity should generally be avoided for approximately 5–6 weeks or until approved by your surgeon.
Regardless of the surgical technique, a specially designed compression garment may be recommended for a period after surgery to support healing and manage swelling. The appropriate garment will be provided by our clinic, along with detailed instructions for its use.
Discomfort, swelling, and mild bruising around the treated areas are expected during the early stages of recovery.
Postoperative pain can usually be managed with prescribed medication. Following your surgeon’s instructions, attending scheduled follow-up appointments, and gradually resuming physical activity are essential for a safe recovery.
Buttock augmentation procedures, particularly BBL surgery, carry important risks, including infection, bleeding, blood clots, fat embolism, and complications related to anesthesia. These risks and the safety measures used during surgery will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
