Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Dermolipectomy – Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

For both men and women, the abdomen is an important part of body appearance, and its shape can significantly influence self-confidence and overall satisfaction with one’s body. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is designed for individuals with loose abdominal skin and weakened abdominal muscles that cannot be adequately improved through exercise and a balanced diet alone.

When the skin becomes excessively stretched, its elastic fibers may become damaged, resulting in stretch marks, particularly in the lower abdominal area. In addition to loose skin, the abdominal muscles may weaken and separate, a condition known as diastasis recti. Abdominoplasty can address these concerns by removing excess skin and, when necessary, repairing separated abdominal muscles.

Several surgical techniques are available, ranging from the removal of excess skin and fatty tissue to more extensive procedures involving tightening of the abdominal wall.

For patients with excess skin following pregnancy or significant weight loss, a traditional tummy tuck can provide excellent results. When the primary concern is localized fat deposits without significant skin laxity, abdominal liposuction may be more appropriate. In selected patients, combining abdominoplasty with liposuction can achieve particularly effective body contouring results.

Preparation: What You Should Know Before Surgery

Consultations with our surgeons and anesthesiologists are free of charge. Open communication about your goals and expectations is essential to developing a treatment plan that meets your individual needs.

To achieve the best possible results from a tummy tuck, patients are generally encouraged to reach and maintain a stable, healthy weight before surgery. Appropriate dietary adjustments and weight management can help improve surgical outcomes.

During your consultation, we will discuss the available surgical options and techniques, answer all your questions, and carefully plan every stage of the procedure together.

Thanks to their extensive experience, our surgical team will provide detailed information about the procedure, preparation, recovery, and expected results, helping you feel informed, confident, and prepared for your transformation.

Surgical Technique: How Is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

Abdominoplasty typically takes between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the extent and complexity of the procedure. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

The incision is made along carefully planned lines in the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area.

Following surgery, a scar remains in the lower abdominal area, usually positioned within the bikini line and extending across the lower abdomen from one hip toward the other. In a traditional tummy tuck, a small additional scar is typically present around the belly button.

Depending on the surgical technique and individual anatomy, the appearance of the belly button can be adjusted to create a natural-looking result. Patients may discuss their preferences for a rounder or more elongated belly button during the consultation.

During surgery, active suction drains are often placed on both sides of the abdomen to remove excess fluid. These are typically removed during the first follow-up appointment, approximately 3–5 days after surgery, depending on the amount of drainage and the patient’s recovery.

A tummy tuck may also be combined with other body contouring procedures, such as breast surgery or thigh liposuction, when medically appropriate.

Recovery and Precautions: Supporting a Smooth Recovery

During the first few days after surgery, adequate rest is essential. The surgical wound should be kept clean and dry, following the instructions provided by your surgeon.

While resting in bed, placing a pillow or support beneath the knees can help maintain a slightly flexed position, reducing tension on the abdominal incision and supporting the healing process.

To improve circulation and help reduce the risk of blood clots, patients are encouraged to perform gentle leg and ankle movements, such as ankle pumps or light cycling motions while lying down. Early, assisted walking is also important and should begin as soon as your medical team considers it safe. Additional blood clot prevention measures may be prescribed according to individual risk.

Patients are required to wear a specialized abdominal compression garment for approximately 4–6 weeks after surgery. This garment is provided by our clinic and helps support the abdominal wall during recovery.

During the first few days, movements that place excessive tension on the abdominal area should be avoided. Your surgeon will advise you on safe positioning, walking, sitting, and gradually returning to normal movement.

Strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and sports should generally be avoided for at least 5–8 weeks, depending on the extent of surgery and individual recovery.

Sexual activity may usually be resumed after approximately 2–3 weeks, provided healing is progressing well and the activity does not cause discomfort or strain on the abdominal area.

Before surgery, patients are informed that temporary numbness or reduced sensation in the treated abdominal skin is common. Sensation often gradually improves over the following months, although some areas of altered sensation may persist.

Pregnancy is still possible after abdominoplasty. However, a subsequent pregnancy may stretch the abdominal skin and muscles again, potentially affecting the surgical results. For this reason, a tummy tuck is generally recommended after a patient has completed their planned pregnancies.

Possible complications include postoperative bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, blood clots, and delayed wound healing. Although many patients recover without significant complications, these risks must be carefully discussed before surgery.

Most patients can expect to return to social activities within approximately 10–14 days, depending on their recovery and the extent of the procedure.

Following a tummy tuck, many patients feel more motivated to maintain a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and balanced nutrition. Patients often tell us that they feel more confident and comfortable with their appearance.

At Clinic Olymp, our mission is to help patients feel confident in their own bodies through carefully planned procedures and individualized care.
