About the Procedure

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess sagging skin and fatty tissue from the inner upper arms, creating a firmer, smoother, and more defined appearance.

Sometimes, loose skin persists despite a balanced diet and regular exercise. This can lead to what is commonly referred to as “bat wings” – excess skin hanging from the upper arms.

This concern is particularly common among women over the age of 40 and individuals who have experienced significant weight loss. For many patients, the appearance of their upper arms can affect their confidence and make them feel uncomfortable wearing sleeveless clothing.

Preparation: What Should You Know Before an Arm Lift?

Preparing for arm lift surgery begins with a detailed consultation with one of our experienced plastic surgeons to discuss the available treatment options.

During your free consultation, our team will answer all your questions and help you understand what to expect from the procedure.

Regardless of the surgical technique selected, the consultation includes an assessment of your overall health, a discussion of your goals and expectations, and detailed information about the necessary preoperative preparations.

Surgical Technique: Choosing the Best Approach for You

Arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) typically takes approximately two hours, depending on the amount of excess skin and fatty tissue that needs to be removed.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and can often be carried out on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to leave the clinic a few hours after surgery and continue their recovery at home, provided their medical condition allows it.

The surgical incision is usually positioned along the inner aspect of the upper arm to make the resulting scar less noticeable.

Over the following months, the scar gradually fades and becomes less prominent. Your surgeon may recommend specialized scar care products and treatments to support the healing process and improve the appearance of the scar.

Recovery and Precautions

Following arm lift surgery, swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common. These symptoms can usually be managed effectively with prescribed pain medication and appropriate postoperative care.

Swelling and bruising typically begin to subside within the first two weeks, allowing patients to notice improvements in the shape and contour of their upper arms. However, the final results become more apparent over the following months as the tissues heal and residual swelling resolves.

Compression garments or bandages help support the treated areas and promote proper healing. Wearing them regularly during the first month after surgery is generally recommended, according to your surgeon’s instructions.

Most patients can return to social activities after approximately 10 days, while office-based work may be resumed after about one week, depending on individual recovery.

Strenuous physical activities, heavy lifting, and intensive exercise should generally be avoided for 4–6 weeks after surgery or until your surgeon confirms that it is safe to resume them.
