About Body Contouring
Measures such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and undergoing cosmetic body treatments are sometimes not enough to achieve the desired body shape. This is when plastic surgery may offer an additional solution.
Liposuction (the surgical removal of excess fat deposits) is one of the most popular and commonly performed procedures in plastic surgery. The areas most frequently treated include the abdomen, hips, upper arms, thighs, lower legs, and buttocks. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss. Instead, it is designed to contour and reshape specific areas of the body.
Preparing for Liposuction
In October 2002, the independent German consumer testing organisation Stiftung Warentest published an evaluation of liposuction consultations at 30 clinics and medical practices across Germany in its TEST magazine. According to the evaluation, the Nofretete Clinic, founded in Germany in 1998 by our Dr Panfilov, received the highest rating.
Our surgeons have many years of experience, extensive expertise, and a combined record of more than 3,500 liposuction procedures. They will answer all your questions and provide the information you need to feel confident and well-informed before surgery. A thorough medical examination and individual assessment will also be performed to help achieve the best possible results.
Surgical Technique: Gentle and Precise
The duration of liposuction and the type of anesthesia depend on the areas being treated. The procedure typically takes between 1.5 and 4 hours and may be performed under general anesthesia or total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA).
When larger amounts of fat are removed from multiple areas of the body, general anesthesia is usually recommended. The procedure itself involves the use of specialized cannulas to carefully remove excess fatty tissue.
The amount of fat that can be safely removed must be determined individually, taking into account the patient’s body weight, overall health, and the extent of the procedure. Large-volume liposuction carries additional risks and requires careful surgical planning and appropriate medical monitoring.
At Clinic Olymp, we follow modern plastic surgery techniques and use a specialized operating table that allows the patient to be positioned upright during the final stages of liposuction.
During the last 3–5 minutes of the procedure, this positioning enables the surgeon to assess body contours more accurately and make final adjustments where necessary. The technique is intended to improve precision, achieve smoother contours, and reduce the likelihood of minor irregularities requiring subsequent correction.
Recovery and Precautions
Although smaller liposuction procedures may be performed on an outpatient basis, an overnight stay at the clinic under medical supervision is recommended for more extensive procedures.
To support healing and achieve optimal results, patients undergoing larger procedures are generally required to wear a specialized compression garment as instructed by their surgeon.
Early, gentle movement is also important during recovery to help reduce the risk of blood clots. While resting, patients may be advised to perform simple leg movements, such as cycling motions, as part of their postoperative care. These exercises do not replace walking or other medically recommended measures for preventing blood clots.
Pain medications containing acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) should be avoided unless specifically approved by your surgeon, as they may increase the risk of bleeding.
Bruising and swelling are common after liposuction and may persist for several weeks. Initial improvements in body contour may become noticeable after approximately six weeks, although the final results can take several months to fully develop as swelling subsides.
Strenuous exercise and sports activities should generally be avoided for the first 4–6 weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure and your surgeon’s recommendations.
