Biopolymer Removal from Lips
Biopolymer injections were once a popular method of lip augmentation, particularly before hyaluronic acid fillers became widely used in aesthetic medicine. At the time, many patients considered them a practical solution because they promised permanent results without the need for regular touch-up treatments.
However, this very permanence has proven to be one of their greatest disadvantages over time.
Today, biopolymers are no longer considered a modern or safe option for lip enhancement. Unlike temporary fillers, these materials do not naturally break down in the body. They may become incorporated into surrounding tissues and, over the years, lead to aesthetic, functional and medical complications.
At Clinic Olymp, biopolymer removal from the lips is performed following a thorough examination, assessment of the surrounding tissues and an individualised surgical treatment plan.
What Is Biopolymer?
Biopolymer is a term commonly used to describe permanent synthetic materials that were previously injected to increase the volume of the lips and other facial areas. In aesthetic medicine, the term is often associated with liquid silicone and other permanent fillers that, unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, do not naturally dissolve in the body.
Once injected, biopolymer does not always remain confined to the original treatment area. Over time, it may become incorporated into surrounding tissues, causing thickening, lumps, asymmetry, swelling or changes in lip shape.
Some patients experience these changes relatively soon after injection, while others may develop complications many years later.

Why Are Hyaluronic Acid Fillers a Better Option Than Biopolymers?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are widely used in modern lip augmentation because they allow greater control over the final result. Hyaluronic acid gradually breaks down in the body, meaning the effects are temporary rather than permanent.
This allows lip volume, shape and proportions to be adjusted over time. If a patient prefers a more subtle enhancement, a more natural appearance or a change in lip shape, these adjustments can often be made gradually and with greater precision.
Another important advantage of hyaluronic acid fillers is that, in certain situations, they can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
Biopolymers cannot be dissolved in the same way. Because these materials do not respond to hyaluronidase, surgical removal is often necessary when complications occur.
For these reasons, hyaluronic acid fillers are generally considered a more flexible and controllable option for patients seeking lip enhancement. However, they also carry potential risks and should be administered by qualified medical professionals.
Why Do Patients Choose Biopolymer Removal?
There are several reasons why patients may consider removing biopolymer from their lips, including aesthetic concerns, functional difficulties and medical complications.
The most common reasons for seeking a consultation include:
- Unnatural lip shape
- Excessive lip volume
- Asymmetry between the upper and lower lips
- Hardness or firmness of the lips
- Lumps, nodules and tissue thickening
- Chronic or recurring swelling
- Migration or displacement of the injected material
- Changes in the appearance of the smile
- A feeling of tightness or discomfort
- Dissatisfaction with previous lip augmentation results
For some patients, the concern is not limited to appearance. The presence of permanent material may also create an uncomfortable sensation within the lips.
The lips may feel unusually firm, appear swollen or become visibly distorted. In some cases, the boundary between natural tissue and injected material becomes irregular.
In these situations, the aim of surgery is not only to remove as much problematic material as safely possible, but also to restore a more natural lip shape, softer appearance and improved symmetry.
How Is Biopolymer Removed from the Lips?
Biopolymer removal is most commonly performed surgically. The exact surgical approach depends on the amount of material present, its location, the condition of the surrounding tissues and the appearance of the lips before surgery.
A detailed examination and consultation are essential before any procedure.
During the examination, the surgeon evaluates the condition of the lips, tissue quality, the presence of lumps or nodules, asymmetry and the realistic possibilities for correction.
It is important to understand that biopolymer removal does not always mean that the lips can be completely restored to their original appearance.
When the material has been present for many years, it may become closely associated with the surrounding tissues, making complete removal difficult or potentially damaging to healthy tissue.
For this reason, every procedure must be carefully planned according to the patient’s individual circumstances.
In some cases, a substantial amount of the material can be removed during a single operation. In others, particularly when large amounts of biopolymer are present or significant tissue deformities have developed, treatment may need to be performed in stages.
Can Hyaluronic Acid Fillers Be Used After Biopolymer Removal?
In selected cases, hyaluronic acid fillers may be considered after the lips have fully healed and the surrounding tissues have stabilised.
However, additional filler treatment is not performed immediately after surgery and may not be suitable for every patient.
The primary goal is to remove the problematic material as safely as possible, allow inflammation and tissue irritation to subside, and support proper healing.
Only after recovery can the surgeon assess whether additional aesthetic correction is necessary and determine the safest and most appropriate approach.
When Should You Schedule a Consultation?
If you have previously received biopolymer injections in your lips and have noticed changes in shape, hardness, lumps, swelling, asymmetry or simply feel dissatisfied with their appearance, the first step is to schedule a professional examination and consultation.
During your appointment, the surgeon will assess the condition of the tissues and discuss what can realistically be achieved through surgery.
Every case is different, which is why an individualised approach is essential when planning biopolymer removal.
Removing biopolymer from the lips requires experience, precision and a careful understanding of both aesthetic and functional outcomes.
Your initial examination and consultation are free of charge and can be scheduled with Dr Dragana Leković Stojanov.
