More About Facial Fat Grafting (Lipofilling)

Your face is unique, and your wishes and expectations should align with what can realistically be achieved through surgery. That is why a thorough examination and a clear understanding of your goals are essential before the procedure.

If you are not yet ready to undergo more invasive facial rejuvenation procedures, facial fat grafting using your own fat tissue can be an excellent option for achieving a fresher, brighter and more youthful appearance.

The procedure involves extracting fat tissue through liposuction, which is then centrifuged, filtered and carefully injected into specific areas of the face using specialised cannulas.

Preparation: What You Need to Know

Our surgeon will perform a detailed examination and consultation to assess whether the procedure is suitable for you, understand your wishes and expectations, answer all your questions and explain every step of the treatment process.

Our goal is to develop an individualised treatment plan that enhances your natural facial features and achieves harmonious, natural-looking results.

Surgical Technique

Fat tissue is most commonly harvested from the inner thighs, as this area often provides suitable fat deposits for transplantation.

In women, fat distribution in this region is influenced by hormonal factors, including oestrogen. The harvested fat can be used to restore lost facial volume and improve facial contours, contributing to a fuller, fresher and more youthful appearance.

The procedure begins with the extraction of fat tissue using liposuction. The collected fat is then processed through centrifugation and filtration before being carefully transferred into selected areas of the face using specialised cannulas.

Over time, some of the transferred fat may be naturally reabsorbed by the body. In some patients, approximately 30% of the injected fat may be reabsorbed, although the actual amount varies from person to person.

For this reason, our surgeon may harvest a slightly larger quantity of fat than is required for the initial facial fat grafting procedure.

Any remaining processed fat may be stored under specialised conditions for 6–8 months, potentially allowing for an additional correction or facial volume enhancement if necessary, subject to clinical suitability and applicable storage protocols.

Recovery and Precautions

Facial fat grafting, also known as lipofilling, is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require traditional surgical incisions.

The procedure typically takes up to 2 hours and is generally performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home on the same day.

There are usually two small incision sites in the groin area where the fat is harvested, along with approximately two to four tiny entry points on the face where the fat is injected.

These marks generally become increasingly discreet as healing progresses.

Most patients can return to their usual social activities within a few days, depending on the extent of the procedure and their individual recovery.

Temporary swelling and bruising may occur in both the donor and treated areas. Following your surgeon’s postoperative instructions is important for proper healing and optimal results.
